This line is privately owned and operates a passenger service from it's Bridge Lane depot to Kirkstall Abbey on sundays and bank holidays.
The line uses a mixed collection of ex-industrial narrow gauge equipment from the UK and overseas, mainly diesel and one leeds built Greenbat battery electric unit as well.

I have not visited this line in over fifteen years, a lot of things have changed in that time

A few photo's taken during 2 short visits to The Welsh Highland Railway, which currently runs between Caernarfon and Rhyd Ddu, North Wales, on the 6th & 9th April 2007. This narrow gauge line is slowly being rebuilt through the Snowdonia National Park towards Beddgelert and Portmadoc, and is currently running trains on the section between Caernarfon and Rhyd Ddu using ex South African Railways Beyer-Garratt NGG16 (2-6-2 + 2-6-2) locomotives.

The Snowdon Mountain Railway was constructed between December 1894 and February 1896 at a total cost of £76,000, from the base station at Llanberis at a height of 353 ft (107.6m) above sea level, to the Summit Station at 3493 ft (1065m). The summit of Snowdon at 3560 ft (1085m) is the highest peak in England and Wales.
The rack and pinion system used is that patented by the Swiss engineer Dr Roman Abt.
The railway, laid to a gauge of 2ft 7 ½in (800 mm) consists of a single track with 3 passing loops spaced equidistantly between Llanberis and the Summit. (Hebron at 1069 ft (326 m), Halfway at 1641 ft (500 m) and Clogwyn at 2556 ft (779 m)). The average speed of the trains is 5 mph (8 kph).
The total length of the railway is 4 miles 1188 yards (7.53 km), with an average gradient of 1 in 7.86. The steepest gradient on the route is 1 in 5.5. Snowdon Mountain Railway is the only public rack and pinion railway in the British Isles.

Today I took a trip over the Pennines to visit the East Lancashire Railway at Bury. The diesel hauled service was in the charge of 40135 but this was swapped to D5054 after the first trip due to 40135 developing a mechanical fault. The steam hauled service was in the charge of 71000 Duke of Gloucester. The weather was generally fine and sunny, although unfortunately with the sun low and bright and the Duke running chimney first heading north it was practically impossible to get a decent shot of it.

On the 5th of September I had a day out on the K&WVR, one of the countries finest preserved railways, after a short ride behind standard tank 80002 from Keighley to Oakworth I walked as far as Haworth, stopping at various vantage points for photo's. from Haworth I caught the train to Oxenhope and then waited for the last train back to Keighley.

A sunday afternoon spent beside the Derby to Birmingham mainline. Includes photo's taken at Sheffield and Derby during the journey there and back. On the way back from Ireland I made s slight detour and spent half a day at Rugby. I arrived at 06:00 on a very murky morning, by 08:00 the early morning mist had cleared to leave bright (too bright?) sunshine. On 8 April 2004, Midland Mainline organised a final loco-hauled train out of London St Pancras before closure of the historic trainshed for rebuilding in connection with the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. 47355 and 45112 top'n'tailed the special. These are some of the photos I took that day at Kettering, plus on the way there & the way back.
